Name Of Party: Soca Junkies (All Island Carnival)

All Island Carnival officially kicked off the Carnival season with a bang with their first of 10 party series, Soca Junkies. This is a new carnival series which will take the soca spirit all over the island unlike their predecessors who kept carnival only in Kingston. I personally liked this idea, and I’m sure the people in other parishes will too.
Soca Junkies was scheduled to be from 6pm-2am but knowing me, I had to be a little. I got there at about 11:30, later than I had planned.
My opinion is that the venue was a bit too big. Everyone was situated in the middle, in front the stage, making the exterior look empty. The set-up was nice, had many stations to satisfy the soca junkies needs. Grace, Suppligen, Pepsi, LIME and Smirnoff made their presence evident throughout the venue.
The music was good, Soca junkies were already dancing and even I got carried away a little lol. What I liked is that it wasn’t 100% soca, they teased us with a little dancehall, but stayed true with the soca. It was time for performances and Tanto Blacks was up first, he got the crowd hyped up with his usual antics which they enjoyed, he didn’t overstay his welcome which made his performance much better. The host for the Night, Elva, I must say kept the crowd in a frenzy with her jokes and crazy personality! She even had the LIME girls, Soca Vixen and Pepsi girls do a little dance off which was very eye pleasing ;-)
Elephant man was up next, but…. I had to make my way out the venue as I had other plans that night. So I missed his and Aidonia's, Skinny Fabulous's and Lil Rick's performances
Overall I must say, for the very first staging, Soca Junkies did better than I expected, from the pictures I saw it seems that the crowd got MUCH better after I left and this was confirmed by friends. I can’t say much more as I didn’t stay, but, I haven’t heard many complaints about it other than it could have been better. Can’t be too hard on them, it was the very first staging.
