Party Review: Rum Punch !

Name Of Party: Appleton Rum Punch
Date: December 5th, 2010
Venue: Liguanea Club, New Kingston

It’s now 11:45 pm and I’m just getting back from Rum Punch. I arrived at 8:50 pm, so call that 3 hours of non-stop partying. Rum Punch was scheduled to be from 2 pm to 12 am, but the norm with Jamaicans stipulates that we must always be late; I for one am guilty of this.

Upon arrival, before entering the venue, I must say the roads were lined off with cars which told the story of the inside, CROWDED. As tradition would have it, I made my way to the bar, which was packed with party goers waiting for their rum punch! As expected. It took a while for me to get my 2 cranberries and vodkas. Was the wait worth it? That's the question I asked myself, to which I couldn't answer.

That’s the problem I had with Rum Punch. Rum punch is a reputable party and as such, a big turnout should always be expected. Let’s say there were about 1,000 patrons and there were only 15 bartenders…  Not a good ratio and what that equals is slow service. A few patrons complained about this and although boasting of being a mixed drink and food inclusive party, I heard that patrons had to buy Water and Redbull and at an early stage, they ran out of certain liquors. The food, I can’t say much about it, I didn’t try any, but the comments I heard basically said that it wasn’t all that. Eating at a party has never been my thing, lemme correct that, it depends on the party. I love to dance and have fun, so to me, Food + Alcohol + Dancing = Vomiting... sadly, that statement comes with experience. If the aroma from the food REALLY catches my attention, then I can’t help but to indulge.

As it relates to the overall VIBES of the party, it was OKAY. The musical selections were good as patrons (me included) were always moving, with the exception of when I had just arrived, at which point, everything seemed to be at a standstill but things eventually got better. Code Red’s throwback segment was ok and Zj Liquid’s segment took the vibes to another level.

Overall, I’d give Rum Punch a rating of 7.5/10. There are mixed reviews about this party….. Some said “ IT DID SHOTTTTTT “ … a few said “ It was lame “ … but there are more people claiming it was a success compared to those saying it was a flop.  I’m in the middle on this one. Once again, something just wasn’t right, maybe it’s just me, because other patrons really enjoyed themselves and said “Rum Punch Shotttt “. I'm not one..... I’m still waiting on that party that will WOW … ME!
